Descendants of Vardy Collins

Compiled by Kevin Mullins

Generation No. 1

1. VARDY1 COLLINS was born 1764 in Grayson Co., VA, and died Bef. 1860 in Hancock Co, TN. He married PEGGY GIBSON. She was born Abt. 1773 in NC, and died Aft. 1850 in Hancock Co, TN.

Notes for VARDY COLLINS:

Vardy has been called the "patriarch of the Melungeons", and has been speculated to have been one of the first settlers in the Newmans Ridge/Blackwater area. But a check of the records indicates that Vardy may not have arrived in Hawkins/Hancock Co until ca 1810. There were other Collins and Gibsons in S.W. VA and E. TN earlier than 1810, but I'm not sure whether they were in the Newmans Ridge/Blackwater area. He was in Wilkes Co, NC in 1790, according to the census. He was listed in the Ashe Co, NC census in 1800, and in Hawkins Co, TN in 1810.

Some of Vardy's land dealings:

Littell's Living Age - No.254-31 March, 1848

The Melungens

" The doctor was, as usual, my compagnon de voyage, and we stopped at "Old Vardy's", the hostelrie of the vicinage. Old Vardy is the "chief cook and bottle-washer" of the Melungens, and is really a very clever fellow; but his hotel savors strongly of that peculiar perfume that one
may find in the sleeping-rooms of our negro servants, especially on a close, warm, summer's evening."

The legend of how Vardy and Shepard Gibson came to Hawkins/Hancock Co was told in Will Allen Dromgoole's "Four Branches of Melungeon Tree" (1890's) (referring to Shepard as "Buck");

"These two, Vardy Collins and Buck Gibson, were the head and source of the Melungeons in Tennessee. With the cunning of their Cherokee ancesters, they planned and executed a scheme by which they were enabled to "set up for themselves" in the almost unbroken Territory of North Carolina.

Old Buck, as he was called, was disguised by a wash of some dark description, and taken to Virginia by Vardy where he was sold as a slave. He was a magnificent specimen of physical strength, and brought a fine price, a wagon and mules, a lot of goods, and three hundred dollars in money being paid to old Vardy for his "likely nigger". Once out of Richmond, Vardy turned his mules shoes and stuck out for the wilderness of North Carolina, as previously planned. Buck lost little time ridding himself of his negro disguise, swore he was not the man bought of Collins , and followed in the wake of his fellow thief to the Territory. The porceeds of the sale were divided and each chose his habitation; old Vardy choosing Newman's Ridge, where he was soon joined by others of his race, and so the Melungeons became a part of the inhabitants of Tennessee."

Some researchers believe Vardy was the son of Samuel Collins, and grandson of Thomas Collins, and descended from the Saponi Indian tribe. It's highly possible that Vardy had other children besides the ones listed below, perhaps with Peggy or with a previous wife.

Notes for SIMEON COLLINS:
Simeon was listed as the head of household for 6 "fpc" (free persons of color) on the 1830 Hawkins (later Hancock) Co., TN census.

Excerpt from The Will Grohse Papers;

"Little is known of him. He sold some land to George Gibson (Putnam County, Indiana*), in 1836. A curious will, unwritten, but witnessed and testified to by Sandy Collins, Morgan Collins, Charlotty Collins, Millington Collins, and Allen Collins, is recorded in the Rogersville (TN) Courthouse in which on his dying bed, he bequeathed all his property to his wife, Frankie, to raise the children, etc. because she worked hard with him to get what property he had, etc. The will is not dated. Cpl. Simeon Collins, Co. A, 8th TN Cav (Union)".

I wonder if the last part is right because this Simeon would be around 60 yrs old during the Civil War.

WILL OF SIMEON COLLINS - Hawkins Co., TN

Page 110
No Date Proven Aug 1836
Simeon Collins being of sound and perfect mind & memory did make and publish this his last Will & Testament in manner and form following. He desires and requests that his wife Frankey should have and keep all his property, both real and personal for the purpose of keeping her children together and to raise them on what he left as his wife Frankey had labored with him for all they possessed which said Will and Testament was made while on his death bed and no opportunity of committing his last will to writing as he was soon after taken dangerously ill and died somewhat unexpected and appeared not to have had his mind engaged on the subject no more, which last Will and Testament was declared in presence of the undersigned subscribing witnesses. N.B. He the said Simeon further requested that all his just debts be paid and satisfied & the balance retained for the purpose above stated. Sardy x Collins{note: researchers beleive this to be Vardy Collins}, Morgan x Collins, Charlotty x Collins, Millenton Collins, Allen Collins (his mark)

Note: some of the children listed as Simeon's were born AFTER he supposedly died.

Notes for FRANKIE BUNCH:
Frankie evidently had more children after Simeon died ca 1836, unless some of the children listed in her household in the censuses were grandchildren. She's listed as head of household in the 1840 Hawkins (later Hancock) Co census. Not sure about 1850 census.

In 1860, she was listed in Hancock Co:

Melvina Yong, 10, f, VA

Listed as "White" in above records. Alexander may have died before 1870 as Ethie was listed alone in the 1870 Hancock Co, TN Census, where s he was listed as "Mulatto".

It is doubtful that this is the same Alexander Goins who was murdered in Southwest Virginia, the subject of the song "Poor Goins", as the murder happened about 1844. The records listed above rule this out.

Marriage Notes for ETHIE COLLINS and ALEXANDER GOINS:
Ethie was listed as 'Mulatto" in the 1870 Hancock Co Census, when sh e was living alone next to her son John's family, who was listed as "white". In 1880, she was living with John's family and was listed as "white". In all other censuses, she was listed as "white".She was listed as being born in TN in all censuses. If she was born after 1810, this would be correct as Vardy Collins moved to Newmans R idge from North Carolina about 1810.

Children of ETHIE COLLINS and ALEXANDER GOINS are:
34. i. JOHN3 GOINS, b. Abt. 1833.
35. ii. ALFRED GOINS, b. Abt. 1835, TN; d. 04 Sep 1907, Hancock Co, TN.

15. VARDY3 COLLINS (ALLEN2, VARDY1) was born Abt. 1827 in Hancock Co, TN, and died Bet. 1900 - 1910 in Hancock Co, TN. He married ELIZABETH MAXIE Aft. 1840, daughter of JOHN MAXIE and MILLIE WILBURN. She was born Abt. 1829.

Notes for VARDY COLLINS:
Varda served in the Civil War in Co. E., 2nd TN Inf, for 3 yrs, and 3 months. He was Justice of the Peace from 1866 - 1872. He and Bettie were Baptists. There has been some confusion over whether Varda was Allen's son, or Old Vardy's son. Some think Old Vardy, but I believe it was Allen who was Vardy's son. The censuses are confusing on this, because Varda's age fluctuated with every enumeration;

Notes for ERVIN COLLINS:
Ervin did not have children with Jeanie Collins, his 1st wife. After she died, he married Lizzie Bell and had at least two children, whose names I don't know, one was a girl who died when she was nearly grown; the other, a son who was in the Army in the 1920's.

Notes for JEANIE COLLINS:
Jeanie was described in the Grohse Papers as "...a good woman, member of Prospect Point Baptist Church on Newman's Ridge, inclined to shout in meetings".

Notes for BRANHAM COLLINS:
Lived near the Sulphur Springs Baptist Church, but then moved over to Blackwater Creek in VA(?). After the death of his 1st wife, Martha, he married her sister, Lusanna, but had no children with her. 16. LAURA3 COLLINS (ALLEN2, VARDY1) was born Bef. 1830. She married SOLOMON SEXTON Bef. 1850 in Hancock Co, TN. He was born Abt. 1803 in VA.

Notes for SOLOMON SEXTON:
Apparently Solomon was married to Susan Moore before he married Laura Collins. Susan died before 1850. According to the Grohse Papers, Sol came from VA, and stopped by the home of Allen Collins for dinner. Allen asked him what brought him to TN, he replied "Purposely to hunt me a wife". That same day, he ran off with Allen's daughter, Laura. They lived on Newmans Ridge. Sol supposedly lived to be a very old age, and was described as "tall, straight, and still strong" when he was 104 years old!

Children of LAURA COLLINS and SOLOMON SEXTON are:

i. DELPHA4 SEXTON, b. Abt. 1849, Hancock Co, TN; m. NELSON COLLINS, 25 Mar 1875, Hancock Co, TN; b. Abt. 1835, TN.

Notes for DELPHA SEXTON:
I'm not sure whether Delpha was Sol's daughter with Susan Moore, or with Laura Collins. She was probably Laura's daughter, as Laura was living in the household of Delphy and her husband NelsonCollins in 1880 and listed as "mother'.

17. JAMES3 COLLINS (ALLEN2, VARDY1) was born Abt. 1833 in TN. He married LOUISA JANE ?. She was born Abt. 1836 in KY.

Notes for JAMES COLLINS:
I'm not positive this James Collins who maried Louisa Jane was the same James who was Allen's son, but he lived next door to Allen in 1860, so it's a pretty good possibility. Is this the same James Collins who was in the Civil War, (Pvt. US 2nd TN Inf Co.E)?

In 1875, Sarah filed papers in Chancery Court to stop Steve from taking and selling all of her belongings, claiming he'd run off with another woman. One affidavit reads: "...(Sarah) intermarried with said Stephen Collins about the year 1869, that she had acquired property both real and personal for herself and children by being a United States pensioner, that said Stephen is fixing to leave with one Eliza Stubblefield with whom he had been guilty of living and cohabitating with as man and wife, that he is fixing and trying to sell all the personal property belonging to her & and her children & to deprive & fraudulently dispose of her own estate and get the money and leave the county and apprpriate the same to the benefit of a prostitute..."

The affidavit lists her property as;

Notes for WILSON MISER:
From the Will Grohse Papers; "Wilson was a Private in Co. E. 2nd TN Volunteer Inf (Union Army). Two of his half brothers, Robert and George were killed while serving with the Confederate Army..." "Wilson Miser had extensive land holdings on Blackwater (Vardy) Creek, some of which extended into Virginia. He would pay his work hands 'in the store' by sending his red hat with one of the workers. The merchants knew 'Wilse' would only let his hat go for that purpose."

"He did not draw a Union Veterans Pension because his brother-in-law Howard Collins would not vouch for him. They both served in the same company and regiment.

She married (1) SHEPHERD GIBSON Aft. 1850 in Hancock Co, TN, son of SHEPHERD GIBSON. He was born Abt. 1817 in TN. She married (2) LARKIN MULLINS 09 Sep 1875 in Hancock Co, TN, son of JOHN MULLINS and MAHALA COLLINS. He was born 1844, and died 1915 in Hancock Co, TN.

Notes for SARAH COLLINS:
"Aunt Toney" was very religious, and would easily shout and sing when at church or at meetings at home. After "Aunt Toney's" 1st husband, Shep Gibson, died in the Civil Warm she married Larkin Mullins, another Civil War Vet.

Notes for LARKIN MULLINS:
Larkin and "Aunt Toney" lived on the upper part of Blackwater Valley, near Mulberry Gap Road, in Hancock Co, TN. Larkin was a Union soldier during the Civil War (Pvt. Co. I, 8th TN Cav). Larkin was supposedly named Samuel, but they called him Larkin to distinguish him from the other Samuel Mullins. Apparently, Larkin was a deputy sheriff at one time, as an old newpwper article deaiiled a shooting incident that involved Larkin and his son Andrew;

Daily Citizen [Iowa]
5/5/1893

Nashville, Tenn., May 5--- A special from Bristol, Tenn., tells of a double shooting in the mountains of that region resulting in the immediate death of one man and the mortal wounding of another. The tragedy occurred at the distillery of Washington Lindsay, which is on or very near the Virginia and Tennessee line. Deputy Sheriff Mullens, of Hancock county, Tenn., went to the distillery to arrest a man named Roy for a small offense. Mullens was accompanied by his son, a lad of 15 years old. A row ensued over the attempted arrest when Lindsay, the distiller, shot Mullens through the body. The boy, seeing his father fall, drew a pistol and shot Lindsay, killing him instantly.

The newspaper mistook Wash Livesay's name for Lindsay.

Notes for HOWARD COLLINS:
In the Will Grohse Papers, Howard was described as "a forceful, strong, character, tho obstinate;
influential, fairly well to do.Pvt. Co. E, 2nd TN Cav (Inf?). The Special Census of Civil War Veterans stated that he suffered from chronic diarrhea". Howard would not vouch for his brother-in-law, Wilson Miser's, service in the Civil War, thus depriving Wilson of getting a pension. He was known as "Big Howard".

Another description from the WGP; " 6 ft 1 in tall, dark, black eyes and hair, farmer. A forceful character, strong, determined, fleshy. Sentenced to hang for a killing at his watermill. Later pardoned. Was operator of watermill on Blackwater Creek."

Notes for ELIZABETH COLLINS:
The death index for Hancock County lists "Betty's" age as 67, but she would have been in her 80s, unless she was the daughter of the younger Solomon who died during the Civil War. But in that case, the younger Sol would have had to have been married to a Jincy, as Betty's parents were listed as Sol and Jincy.

Notes for CYNTHIA COLLINS:
In the Will Grohse Papers, Cynthia was described as "tall, thin, lighter complexioned, forgetful, easily persuaded by her grandchildren, at 83 would walk from her daughter Frankie's home down to another daughter, Nancy's home, about 1 and a half each way. She would leave in the morning and come back home that night; also took a horse-back trip to visit her grandson Brownlow Collins, over on Powell's Mt. She didn't want her girls to marry whom they did, and all three ran off to get married. Lived on Blackwater next to Vardy Presbyterian Church. The old house had chimneys on both ends. It was well built". Cynthia used to make shirts for her grandfather, Ben Bunch, and taking food to her grandmother, Mary, after Ben's death, acording to Will Grohse.

If the census was accurate, she may not be Simeon's birth daughter, as she would have been born after his death.

Notes for BATY COLLINS:
Baty was in the Civil War (Co. E., 8th Tenn. Cav.?), from Sep 23, 1863 to Sep 11, 1865. Will Grohse wrote this of Baty; "Like most people of the olden day, he was a moonshiner in his younger days, but as he grew older, he mellowed and was a Ruling Elder of the Vardy Presbyterian Church in his later years. He was of medium height, inclined to be fat, swarthy complexion..., and bald". Baty was shot by Jeff Livesay on Blackwater Creek in late 1891, but was not seriously wounded. In the ca 1897 Home Mission Monthly article "A Visit to the Melungeons" by C.H. Humble, Baty was identified as a "chief" of the Melungeons, and he apparently ran Vardy's old spa and inn.

More About BATY COLLINS:
Cause of Death: old age

Notes for JOHN GOINS:
This apparently is not the same person as "Hammer John" Goins, as other researchers have speculated. John was a Civil War veteran, serving in the 1 TN CAV REG (Co A), along with his brother, Alfred. He may be the same John Goins Sr. that was listed as "U.S. Soldier" in the 1890 Lee Co., VA Veterans Census.

Notes for LUCINDA SEXTON:
On the 1870 Hancock Co, TN Census, Lucinda lists her birthplace as VA, but in the 1880 Census, she lists her birthplace as KY, and her parents' birthplace as VA.

Notes for MARY GOINS:
Her name may have been Meany, as it looks that way in the 1870 census.

She was born 03 May 1853 in Hancock Co, TN, and died 26 Dec 1941 in Hancock Co, TN.

Notes for ALFRED GOINS:
Alfred was a Civil War vet, serving in the First Tennessee Cavalry Regiment, (Co M and A), alongside his brother John. Also serving was a R.J. Goins. I'm not sure of the relationship if any to R.J. Goins. Alfred suffered from health problems caused by his service, including chronic diarhea and lung problems according to the 1890 Veterans Census of Hancock Co. fter Hannah's death, Alfred married Melvina Johnson Mullins, who he had known since she was a oung girl. They lived on Newmans Ridge where Goins Chapel now sits. It is said that the cemetary there where both Alfred and Viney are buried) started out as their family graveyard. This may have been the and that Alfred bought from John and Mahala Mullins, who lived not too far from this area. Alfred's death date was recorded by the Rev. Arthur Taylor in the Grohse papers.

More About ALFRED GOINS:
Burial: Goins Chapel Cem., Hancock Co, TN

Notes for HANNAH GIBSON:
According to the Grohse papers, Hannah was the daughter of Betty Gibson. The date of Hannah's death is from a posting on the internet from a descendant of Alfred and Hannah's. I found a Hannah Goins listed in the 1880 Hancock Co, TN Mortality Schedule, her race written over from either "W" or "M" to "B". Her death was noted as "Anasarca Exposure to cold".

More About HANNAH GIBSON:
Burial: Hancock Co, TN

Notes for MELVINA JOHNSON:
Vina married her step-brother, Wilson Mullins, the son of her mother's 2nd husband. But Wilson was supposedly unkind to her, so they split. After Viney left Wilson, she was said to have walked over two mountains holding her baby son, Landon, to get back home. Vina then married Alfred Goins, an older Civil War vet whom she had known since she was a young girl, and raised a family. After Alfred died, Vina drew from his war pension. Alfred and Vina supposedly owned much of the land where Goins Chapel and cemetary now stand. Vina lived to a very good age, on the Panther Creek side of Newmans Ridge.

v. JAMES ABRAM GARFIELD GOINS, b. 22 May 1888, Hancock Co, TN; d. 15 Mar 1917.

Notes for JAMES ABRAM GARFIELD GOINS:
One source, I believe the Will Grohse Papers, says that Garfield died unmarried in 1917, but I
found this in an email from Arlee Gowen, Pres. of the Gowen Foundation, to the Rootsweb
Melungeon email list;

"James A. Garfield Goins" and his wife Marjorie Goings
were living in Redfield, Arkansas in January, 1989,
according to Louise Goins Richardson of Paragould,
Arkansas who corresponded with them. James A. Garfield
Goins died in Redfield in March 1989.

I don't know which source is right, but he would have been over 100 yrs old if he was living in 1989.
